Just like Raspberries

Most of us have a sort of automatic filter turned on. In a new group of people, we kind of go down the line and say: “interesting … interesting … maybe … cool … no chance … interesting ….” Based on our own intuition and external appearances, we quickly categorize the possibilities for new friends.

Not bad, but dangerous.

I remembering looking down at my red, bloodstained hands and forearms. My face and shirt were likewise stained red, but not with blood. Raspberries. There was something enchanting about “working” for my own lunch as a kid, and the pain of the scratches from the thorns was easily overshadowed by a happily filled stomach. Funny thing about raspberries is that one could easily be turned off from picking them by the menacing thorns around them. Those big juicy ones are often especially hard to get to.

Sometimes we have to dig beyond the external obstacles in order to reach treasures deeper down.

It happens all too often: someone that could end up being a true friend doesn’t even enter our radar because we are scared off by the thorns. Friendship often entails being open, open to discovering in someone at your side a treasure you never knew was there.

Filters can be good, just make sure you don’t filter out the berries too.
