It's like Christopher, who, on his birthday, arrived at school and started passing out candy. There was only one requirement - you had to turn in all your out-of-date candy first: if you even had any.
Anthony sat in the corner with his buddies. They still had a small stash of last year's Halloween candy. A few moldy M&M's, and a few grape-flavored suckers melted together.
"Oh my Gosh, what's with Christopher! He's giving out candy for free; he's passing out king-sized Snickers bars; and he's brought the best Lemonheads this school has ever seen! If we are not careful he will win over all these idiots, and the school principal will show up and ban all out-of-date candy."
Does that put it into perspective? Our problem is that we take for granted that what we ALREADY HAVE is better than what God wants to give us.
In a few years the Romans DID roll in and destroy everything ... and what about Jesus' gift of eternal life? Well, that's still available. Beginning tomorrow, you can take part once again in the events that made it possible.
But first, please throw away all that out-of-date candy - anything that makes your ego grow bigger - and make space for the real King, who can make you happy.
