The Song of Your Heart

A true friend learns the song of your heart.

Some songs are simple, some songs are complex, but every song is made up of hundreds of notes, tempos, rhythms and chords.

True friends often only need a glance in order to understand what the other wants to say, what he needs, what he is feeling. They know you and you know them.

How does one grow in the friendships that one already has? Learn that song.

But there is a tough prerequisite, tough not only because our selfishness is strongly opposed to such an attitude, but also because it is uncommon in our day in age. Listen. You have to listen in order to hear the music that plays in the heart and soul of the other. Not just a listening with your ears, but with your eyes. Not just listening to words, but feelings, gestures, reactions, facial expressions, actions. As we said before, one of the greatest obstacles to growing in friendship is thinking that we already completely understand the other person.

Maybe we do. But often we don’t. If you know somebody and want to grow in your friendship with him, or in general you want to become a better friend, start listening.

It’s not easy because our tendency is to focus on ourselves; attentiveness seems to lack more and more because we are so driven by hurry and stress, always one more thing to do.

Have an attitude of openness; a true desire to discover what is in the other’s heart, what he’s feeling, what motivates him, what his difficulties are. God didn’t make any doubles, and each heart has a song. The friend is the one who learns your song.
