Some virtues are obtained only as a gift from God. But God still relies, as it were, on our trust in him to give us these gifts. That's why he wants us to pray. Not unlike a Father who teaches his son to say "please", before setting a hot meal before him 3 times a day! Yet, in a spiritual sense, no "please"? - no meal!!!
