Secret Diet

So much to learn from today's Gospel. And I wasn't referring to techniques for losing weight, methods for mental relaxation, or even programs you can sign up for where you can feed a poor starving child "for just $1 a day!".

Just like it became "fad" a few years ago in New York city for women to be seen with a baby stroller, it likewise became "culturally in" during the same time in Germany (among other countries) to become a sponsor for the African poor. Billboards all over major cities read: "Have YOU become a sponsor yet?"

It somehow seemed to be the same sort of person being advertised to, who would jump at the latest Bio-brand, or purchase the most recent book on yoga exercises for "soothing both mind and soul."

Jesus didn't start a food-brand or begin passing out charts with meditation techniques. I somehow don't remember him doing collections for the poor in "other" countries either...

But in today's Gospel he DOES talk about Fasting, Prayer and Giving Alms. Here's what he says:

When you give alms - Don't let the left hand know what the right is doing.
When you pray - Go to your room and shut the door.
When you fast - Wash you face and comb your hair.

It's important that we do good for GOD alone, and not mixed with our own egos, figures, or bodily relaxation....

And your Father who sees in secret will repay you.
