He who sees the operation without contemplating the goal of health, or endures back-breaking garden labor without imagining the fruits of the vine, or who experiences severe pain without any meaning, cannot live in peace. He will sooner or later fall apart.
Meaningless suffering is the quickest way to break the human will.
When Christ told his disciples that he had to suffer and die they were "overwhelmed with grief", because they didn't have their eyes set on the Resurrection - which brought us the possibility of eternal life.
