"Wherever" leaves a lot of possibilities open: the world, from one pole to the other... or even Mars, for that matter.
Jesus wants to make sure that the would-be disciple in today's Gospel knows what he's offering. Our Lord doesn't tone down the demands of following him. Christ calls us to go places we've never even dreamt of going, and to do things we thought were impossible. But he doesn't discourage, either. Whether it's going places we've never even dreamt of going, or doing things we thought were impossible, Jesus calls us on!
