Bono Spilled the Beans...

By Benjamin O'Loughlin

Another rock star with a big mouth.

The rock star was Bono and last Friday he spilled the beans on the Catholic Church.

The news? The Church helps people! Bono was in the Vatican to discuss the Church's year 2000 involvement in the  Drop the Debt program geared to convince wealthier countries to let poorer countries off the hook. Bono said that during the last twelve years the program sent an extra 52 million children to school.

However, Bono wasn't there just to thank the Church for "being in the vanguard of that movement." He wanted the Church to assert its bragging rights.

It was an interfaith movement and it was also what you might call inter-disciplinary because you had priests and nuns walking alongside punk rockers and musicians and sports people and soccer mums...but I just think the Church hasn’t done a good job yet of telling people what they’ve achieved and we were just trying to figure out how best to do that.

Bragging rights? Why not? Yesterday we counted our blessings. But we probably forgot to count the ways that we've blessed others.

Every day the Church does wonderful things. You do too.

They don't have to be huge things. Letting the other guy take the parking spot isn't life changing. But it is wonderful in its way. They don't have to make the headlines. Changing dirty diapers won't. But it makes a difference... especially to your baby.

So swagger some... you're changing the world. Little by little. And it wouldn't hurt if the world knew it.
