The Pope to the President

Doom and gloom? Hardly. The Pope wasn't among those who spent yesterday venting about Barack Obama's reelection as US president. As a matter of fact, he spent part of the morning wishing Obama well, and offering the president his prayers for the next four years.

That doesn't mean that Benedict XVI suddenly agrees with Obama that no girl should be punished with an unwanted child, or that government has the right to censor Catholic beliefs.

Vatican spokesman Fr. Lombardi told the press exactly what the Pope is praying for (full text here).

We hope that President Obama will respond to his fellow citizen's expectations, serving law and justice for the good and development of all people, and respecting essential human and spiritual values while promoting a culture of life and religious freedom.

In other words, the Pope is praying that Obama will be the perfect politician. That Obama will serve. Provide law and justice for all: poor and rich, born and unborn. And respect essential human rights like religious freedom.

With the elections over, President Obama won't ever have to face the people's judgment again. Now the ball is in his court. He only has to face his conscience, the unforgiving verdict of history, and God himself.

Meanwhile, the Pope is praying for him. We should too.
