Connecticut Shooting

By Nathan Miller

The School Massacre hits us all where it should - in the heart. We cry; we suffer; we ask WHY? And then we turn around and vow to do what it takes to make sure this will never! happen! again!

  • For some these events eerily bring back memories of 9/11 - and the never-ending, albeit necessary, aftermath of airport screening.
  • For others, this reminds them sadly of Cho Seung-Hui, who shot and killed 32 persons back in 2007 - and the haunting question which might arise in their minds - "WAS there any meaningful aftermath?"
  • Again for others, it might be that moment when, after usually demanding that God "mind his own business" now "curse him for not working miracles." @CathTools

We all search for answers: some in the right places, some in the wrong places.

The Christian, in his sorrow, turns to Christ's words in the Gospel to make sense of this messed-up world. Today's passage offers, if nothing else, at least a glimmer of light and meaning:

"So also will the Son of Man suffer at their hands."

Jesus also died at the hands of evil men. Jesus, more than anyone, knows what it means to suffer. So NO, he will not wipe away our tears or take away the need to respond to a real problem. He won't give us back our children or take away our pain ... but he DOES offer eternal meaning to every tear and every minute of sorrow.
