"Who but God alone can forgive sins?" Today's Gospel makes it look like we cannot forgive others - only God can.
Yet, in another passage, Jesus says: "if you do not forgive others, neither will your Father forgive your transgressions." Mt 6:15
And what if they don't ask for forgiveness? Must I still forgive them?
The secret is in our imitation of God. When God forgives us, since he cannot change, what changes is US. His attitude remains the same throughout: He remains willing to forgive. That is what we are called to imitate - willingness, which is a choice, not a feeling.
