Face It

By Benjamin O'Loughlin

Solemn. Scary. Powerful. Mean. Impassive. Angry. Strange.

For thousands of years, we tried to get God's face right. We chiseled away at stone, carved away at wood, and daubed pigment on cave walls. And never got it quite right.

None of those images understood us. None of them loved us. None of them listened. None of them cared.

And when God finally came, we didn't recognize him. Because he looked like us.

We often grapple with how difficult it is to believe. With how distant God seems. With how hard it is to connect with him in our fast-paced world.

We forget that he has a face.

God became man. He smiled, cried, frowned, grinned, squinted. He didn't just look down at everything that he had made, and say it was good. He stepped down out of heaven into the dust-filled chaos of Jerusalem's camel infested traffic jams, and looked around at us with love.

And we can look into his eyes and love him back.
