(Gospel) Jesus begins his ministry by going to "the people who sit in darkness."
He does two things: he preaches and he heals. His words share God's plan for happiness, and his multiple healings show that he is truly powered by God.
It may be true that the crowds flocked to him more because they wanted to be rid of their diseases yet the combination of Jesus' words and example simply cannot be ignored. Much like a mother who wishes to teach her children to be grateful - she will do this best by showing her children how grateful she is for their smallest acts of virtue.
