The pharisees might have asked Jesus a similar question today. He would have said: "it depends." Eating the temple bread was normally forbidden, but to stay alive the great King David together with his men did.
Laws don't exist as goals in themselves, rather they are in place to help us make the right choices. When running a red light will save someone's life - then it is to be preferred over sitting and waiting for the green.
But knowing WHEN and WHICH laws are breakable for the sake of a greater good depends on having solid priorities when it comes to what matters most.
