Adam married a woman with a flair for apples. We've continued that culinary tradition. Mankind's kitchen is full of apple pie, apple cobbler, apple sauce, apple fritters, apple everything and anything.
One detail: we're all hyper allergic to apples. They do a number on our system. But we just can't seem to stop eating them. Because they're just so good.
We've come up with alka-seltzer, antacids, and a slew of products for heartburn. They may not fix the problem, or stop the damage apples are doing to our digestive track, but they do stop the pain.
Very few people have stopped doing apples all together. Most of them were labelled fanatics. Some of them even started going around uprooting apple trees. Needless to say, we put a quick end to that. The fanatics were put in their place. New Johnny Appleseeds toured the world, fixing the damage those madmen had done. Apples are part of life. We need them.
That is the lie. We don't need apples. But very few of us have the strength and the courage to tear up the apple trees in our own backyards, and do without them.
Last Saturday Pope Francis reminded the world that war is "the suicide of humanity." And "behind a war there are always sins."
Want to stop war? Suffering? Start with the apples.
Go here for the Pope's whole Saturday homily.
