Tom Petty's song, It's Good to be King, sums up well what many think about Kingship:
It's good to be king and have your own wayGet a feeling of peace at the end of the dayAnd when your bulldog barks and your canary singsYou're out there with winners, yeah, it's good to be king
Being King, for most, is about ME, MYSELF and I: My way, my girls, my friends, my bulldog and canary ... my way of winning that is supposed to bring me peace.
Jesus' way of reigning as King has just as much to do with HIM as it does with ME. Because he sets the model to follow. It's not like he reigns and we don't; rather, he reigns in such a way that we can imitate the attitudes of his heart.
"If my kingdom did belong to this world, my attendants would be fighting to keep me from being handed over to the Jews. But, as it is, my kingdom is not here." Gospel
The best images of Jesus reigning as king are those moments when he hangs on the cross, or washes the feet of his disciples: total sacrifice, prefect humility.
And sacrificial humility is something we can all live - and that brings us lasting peace.
