This could be what we think when we hear Jesus ask Peter three times whether or not he loves Him.
Not unlike confession, right? I mean, if you are forgiven from your sins, why do you still need to do a penance afterwards?
The penance serves the purpose of cleansing the soul of any remaining effects of the sins we have committed. God forgives us of our offenses, but we still need to make up for our misdeeds with good thoughts, words and deeds.
If you shoot a hole in the bucket and the water flows out, after you fix the hole, the bucket still needs to be refilled.
